Target Corporation/Ferguson Enterprises

In 2000, Target Corporation announced the location of a new 1.35 million square foot distribution center in the Cedar Valley. The Center distributes general merchandise products to Target stores in Iowa and surrounding states.

Within 12 months of the opening of Target’s Regional Distribution Center’s mammoth 1.3 million square foot distribution center another national distributor announced plans to build in the area.

Ferguson Enterprises, the country’s largest distributor of plumbing supplies built a $21 million dollar 608,800 square foot distribution center in Waterloo.

Highway access was key. The company does a lot of business in Milwaukee and Minneapolis so having immediate access to U.S. Highway 20 going east and the Avenue of the Saints going north and south worked in Waterloo’s favor.

Recently, Target Corp. opened a secondary distribution center to house its perishable foods items at a cost of $90 million and 425,000-square-foot. The new facility opened across the street from the 1.3-million-square-foot distribution center that the company opened in 2001. The side-by-side distribution centers are the only complex of its kind in Target’s nationwide system.

"We looked at a wide variety of locations for a new distribution center," said Lena Michaud, a Target Corporation spokesperson. "What we looked at in Cedar Falls was a chance to create a campus atmosphere. It allows us to leverage the existing facility and investment in Cedar Falls."

The Cedar Valley’s excellent east/west and north/south highway connections make it a preferred location for companies seeking a distribution location in the upper Midwest.
